History Of Hurlburt Rock Products
Hurlburt Rock Products has been a supplier of Sand and Gravel in Southern Alberta since 1977. We are a family owned and operated business situated just off of Hwy 2 west of Fort Macleod Alberta.
Now moving into the third generation we love screening/crushing/washing rocks and sand! You have challenging specifications required by an engineer? We can probably supply you with these products. No engineer, just give us a call and we will do our best to put our years of experience into working for you to select the right product for your use.
On a warm chinook day in February of 1977, Ken, Brant and Thane Hurlburt were walking in the field where our wash plant is situated now, wondering who we should talk to about all the gravel on Hurlburt Ranch land. Then Ken said…….
“There must be someone we could talk to about all this rock, Lord knows it doesn’t grow any grass for the cows!” shortly after he said this, a car drove into the field and the man asked us if we are the Hurlburt’s? He was from Burnco Industries in Calgary, and they are looking for a sand and gravel source around Fort Macleod (true story!).
Well, Burnco moved equipment in and started crushing and washing and in May of 1977 we loaded the first load of washed rock on to Barry Hornberger’s truck and he delivered it to O’Sullivan’s concrete plant in Fort Macleod. Our first sale of washed aggregates for concrete, and we had no idea how good this product was!
After the 1st 8 years of operation, and many tonnes of railway ballast produced, the Hurlburt’s had the opportunity to procure another very large railway ballast contract, on our own without Burnco. In discussion with Burnco’s president, Jim Burns, he said “I think it is time for you to graduate and operate on your own.” So we did!
Hurlburt Rock Products joined the Alberta Sand and Gravel Association to become more aware of what was taking place in the industry. Thane Hurlburt sat on the board of directors of the association from 1992 through 1995, working on many projects including the start of the road use agreement for producers.
We purchased the Claresholm concrete plant from Lafarge and embarked on our 1st soiree into the other side of concrete aggregate production, actually producing concrete. It was in these 1st few years with this plant that Thane Hurlburt determined that every washed materials producer should have experience in producing concrete, and vis versa!
We purchase our 2nd concrete plant, Vulcan S&S from Harvey Simmons and immediately started supplying concrete to build the grain terminal in Vulcan. This was quite the experience as these continuous concrete pours are 24 hours per day until the job is complete. We had so many people from the area want to be involved!
Our aggregate business was becoming very busy as we were supplying our own concrete plants, and 6 others. We sold our concrete plants to Tom Caruso of Noble Concrete in Picture Butte, and continued to supply them along with our other customers. This was a good decision as it put us back into a singular focus.
New washing equipment was needed and after a trip to Ireland it was decided to purchase 2 Dernaseer 450’s from Dernaseer Engineering in county Tyrone. The 1st one was installed in 2018 and the 2nd installed in 2019. These along with 2 existing wash plants have increased our production to over 500tph, when we need it!
